Abstract In this paper the attention has been focused on the optimum dimensional synthesis of gripping mechanisms when the basic gripping purpose is taken into account.

have been revised with the aim to deduce useful analytical formulation. Then the synthesis problem has been approached and it has been formulated as an optimization problem by using the deduced formulation for a performance
index of the gripping action.
